چکیده

Radio sources have traditionally provided convenient beacons for probing the early Universe. Hy Spinrad was among the first of the tenacious breed of observers who would attempt to obtain optical identifications and spectra of the faintest possible ‘radio galaxies’ to investigate the formation and evolution of galaxies at hy redshift. Modern telescopes and instruments have made these tasks much simpler, although not easy, and here we summarize the current status of our hunts for hy redshift radio galaxies (HyZRGs) using radio spectral and near–IR selection. 1. Hy Z Radio Galaxies: Why? The first optical identifications of (bright) radio sources with (faint) galaxies were made when Hy Spinrad was still a teenager (Windhorst 1999; these proceedings). After that it was soon realized that the ‘invisible’ universe of radio sources provided convenient beacons to locate very distant galaxies and thus might be used to study their formation and evolution. Optical and near - Ir Imaging of Ultra Steep Spectrum Radio Sources - the K − Z Diagram of Radio and Optically Selected Galaxies

We present optical and/or near-IR images of 128 ultra steep spectrum (USS) radio sources. Roughly half of the objects are identified in the optical images (R ∼ < 24), while in the near-IR images, >94% are detected at K ∼< 22. The mean K−magnitude is K̄ = 19.26 within a 2 ′′ diameter aperture. The distribution of R − K colors indicates that at least 1/3 of the objects observed have very red color...

New High–Redshift Radio Galaxies from the MIT–Green Bank Catalog

We present optical identifications and redshifts for seventeen new high–redshift radio sources. Fifteen of these sources are radio galaxies; the remaining two are high–redshift, steep–spectrum, radio–loud quasars. These objects were discovered as part of an ongoing study of compact (θ < 10), moderately steep spectrum (α4.8 GHz 1.4 GHz > 0.75, Sν ∝ ν ) sources from the MIT – Green Bank (MG) radi...

Ultra Steep Spectrum radio sources in the Lockman Hole: SERVS identifications and redshift distribution at the faintest radio fluxes

Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) radio sources have been successfully used to select powerful radio sources at high redshifts (z & 2). Typically restricted to large-sky surveys and relatively bright radio flux densities, it has gradually become possible to extend the USS search to sub-mJy levels, thanks to the recent appearance of sensitive low-frequency radio facilities. Here a first detailed analys...

Multiwavelength characterization of faint ultra steep spectrum radio sources: A search for high-redshift radio galaxies ⋆

Context. Ultra steep spectrum (USS) radio sources are one of the efficient tracers of powerful high-z radio galaxies (HzRGs). In contrast to searches for powerful HzRGs from radio surveys of moderate depths, fainter USS samples derived from deeper radio surveys can be useful in finding HzRGs at even higher redshifts and in unveiling a population of obscured weaker radio-loud AGN at moderate red...

We report the discovery of the most distant known AGN, the radio galaxy TN J0924−2201 at z = 5.19. The radio source was selected from a new sample of ultra–steep spectrum (USS) sources, has an extreme radio spectral index α 365MHz = −1.63, and is identified at near–IR wavelengths with a very faint, K = 21.3± 0.3 object. Spectroscopic observations show a single emission line at λ ∼ 7530 Å which ...
